Why I Coach
Throughout my career whilst working alongside fellow executives, senior management and team leaders I have been able to develop and build upon my mentoring, coaching and professional development skills.
During my time in business I was able to observe what success looks like, and the highs and lows encountered along the journey. Many of my outward facing roles often required me to challenge well establish customs and practices, which frequently took me outside my comfort zone, but I fully understood and appreciated the potential rewards. The ability to win over colleagues was a crucial to my success. This has given me a natural empathy for those who find themselves in similar circumstances.
I understand how challenging it can be for those in senior roles to move beyond acceptance of the status quo and strive to progress against possible resistance from colleagues. I have and continue to be coached and recognise the true benefits it can bring to individuals who may be unable to share their thoughts and vision with others. I firmly believe that coaching is a must for all those in senior roles and hence my focus in this area.
I have spent years working with and alongside some strong individuals who may have big egos and personalities, but at the same time can sometimes lack confidence and feel particularly vulnerable to comment and criticism. I recognise there is a genuine need for them to find an impartial listening ear.
Feedback from professional colleagues in business have described me as a “highly skilled, experienced and knowledgeable in his discipline and provides confident, motivated leadership. He is also a good listener, and capable of managing continuous and fast-moving change well and leading others”. This understanding of the fast and ever-changing business world has enabled me to assist others through coaching.
As a coach I have been be described as “having a relaxed style, good sense of humour and the ability to build rapport quite easily. His questions are always well positioned, varied and succinct. He always allows space and demonstrates good listening”.
To contribute to my own professional development, I am currently working towards gaining accredited coaching qualifications. This is helping me understand the tools required for effective coaching. I am also a member of the Guildford Coaches Group.
In addition to the fulfilment I derive from work, I am keen on the outdoors and enjoying the countryside, keeping fit, book binding and buying and selling antiques. I am also involved in charitable fund-raising activities.
